The Solace chair is a conceptual piece inspired by the intersection of a personal story and an art movement. The central focus is the story.
I knew that I wanted to include wood as a component. While going through the design process, I finally questioned myself why a wooden foundation felt necessary. The rings of a tree tell its history. There is a connection; it is rooted to the ground. Those roots provide nourishment and allow it to grow, but it is additionally nourished by its surroundings. These surroundings may become a source of destruction. The strong roots of family and friends can guide through the physical and mental storms of life.
In a sense, the wood represents you as well as your roots. A solid foundation which has had some changes to it. The wooden back of the chair contains a cutout where the spine rests. Hidden in the upper part of the chair back, a block of wood connects to fabric. This can be pulled out and attached to the chair base. When seated, the fabric lightly hugs around your shoulders. Your foundation is beautiful, but the chair acts as a reminder that it is important to be gentle with yourself. Sometimes what is most needed is comfort.
